17th Apr-5th June, Friday evening 8 Week, 6.30-9.00pm
Course Overview
This course is designed especially for beginners, offering a gentle introduction to hand-building and wheel throwing techniques. You’ll be guided through essential methods like centering on the wheel, pinch pots, coil building, using different techniques on one item, and glazing. You’ll have the chance to try out a variety of techniques, and we encourage everyone to explore their own preferences. By the end of the course, you'll feel confident enough to start creating independently.
Each class is limited to 6 participants, keeping a smaller group of students, and the teacher can provide more one-on-one guidance. Over the 8 weeks, you’ll typically make around 8 pieces. Our studio offers a lovely range of glazes for you to experiment with. If you're interested in learning ceramic painting, we can arrange additional time for you to explore that too.
Your finished pieces will be ready for collection about 4 weeks after the course ends, but sometimes it may take a little longer. We’ll email you when your work is ready. Please collect your pieces within 4 weeks of receiving the email, as we unfortunately can’t store them for longer. If you are not collected within that time, we’ll give them to charity shops due to limited shelf space.
For those who have completed this beginner course and are interested in progressing, we also offer intermediate hand building courses—check our website for details. Alternatively, if you’d like to join our studio as a member, you can find more information online.

18th May-22nd Jun, Monday evening, 6.30-8.30/9.00 PM
Course Overview
This course is designed especially for beginners, offering a gentle introduction to hand-building techniques. You’ll be guided through essential methods like pinch pots, coil building, slab work, and glazing.
What You Will Make
Throughout the course, you’ll create a range of functional pieces such as bowls, cups, plates, or small vessels, while also having the freedom to explore more personal or sculptural forms. By the end of the course, you’ll build a small collection of handmade pieces and feel confident enough to continue making independently.
Kurinuki and Eastern Ceramic Techniques
A highlight of the course is a dedicated session on Eastern techniques, where you’ll create a Kurinuki cup by carving directly from a solid block of clay using knives or wire. This method encourages a slower, more intuitive way of working, with a focus on texture, form, and material.
Small Group Pottery Classes (Max 6 Students)
Each class is limited to a maximum of 6 students, allowing for a more focused and supportive learning environment. This ensures more one to one guidance throughout the course.

2nd Apr-23rd Apr, Thursday, 6.30-9.00pm
30th Apr-21st May, Thursday, 6.30-9.00pm
If you’ve already taken a beginner wheel throwing course and feel ready to improve your skills, this course is designed to help you build a stronger foundation through guided practice.
Rather than focusing on making finished pieces each session, this course helps you understand how to control clay more confidently and consistently on the wheel.
If you are a complete beginner, we recommend starting with our Beginner 6 Week Wheel Throwing Course before enrolling in this class. Beginner 6-week course
What You Will Practice
Throughout the course, you’ll focus on throwing simple forms such as cylinders, gradually improving your control over height, shape and wall thickness.
In the first session, you’ll cut open your pieces to understand what’s happening inside the clay. This is an important step in building awareness and improving consistency.
As the course progresses, you’ll begin to notice more control in your throwing, allowing you to create cleaner, more refined forms that can later be developed into bowls, cups and other functional pieces.
A Different Approach to Learning the Wheel
Instead of approaching wheel throwing mechanically, this course introduces a more intuitive, Asian-influenced way of working. We focus on rhythm, sensitivity, and learning to work with the clay rather than forcing it.
This approach helps you build a more natural connection with the material, which is key to long-term improvement.
A Practice-Based Course
This is a technique-focused course. Some sessions may not result in finished pieces, as the emphasis is on repetition and improvement rather than outcome.
However, this process is essential for developing stronger skills on the wheel. Over time, it leads to more stable, confident throwing and better results in your future work.
Who This Course Is For
This course is suitable for students who have completed a beginner pottery or ceramics course and want to improve their wheel throwing skills.
If you are looking to move beyond the basics and gain more control and consistency, this course will support your next stage of development.
Continue Your Ceramics Journey
After completing this course, you can continue practising through our studio membership or join more advanced classes to further refine your skills. You will be eligible to progress to the 8 Week Intermediate course.
