31 May-5 June, Sunday, 11-1pm, 6 Week
Course Overview
This course introduces hand-building pottery through a selection of Asian ceramic techniques, offering a more focused and material-led approach to working with clay.
Over six weeks, you will explore how form, surface and process come together through a series of structured making sessions. The course is designed for beginners, while also offering depth for those who want to move beyond a general introduction to ceramics.
What You Will Learn
Throughout the course, you will be guided through a range of hand-building techniques, each connected to a specific way of thinking about clay.
As shown in the images, you will learn pinch forming through making bowls such as chawan, rice bowls and small serving bowls, focusing on proportion, balance and use. You will also explore slab building combined with clay printing, using natural textures to create subtle surface variation.
The course also introduces Nerikomi (Jiaotai), a coloured clay technique where patterns are built into the material itself rather than applied on the surface. In addition, you will learn the Kurinuki method, carving forms directly from a solid block of clay using simple tools.
A Different Approach to Making
Rather than focusing only on outcome, this course places attention on process. Each session introduces a different method, allowing you to gradually build both technical skills and a more intuitive understanding of form, surface and material.
This approach encourages a slower way of working, where decisions are made through touch, repetition and observation.
What You Will Make
During the course, you will create a collection of functional and expressive ceramic pieces, including bowls, vessels and patterned forms. Each piece reflects a different technique introduced during the course.
Small Group Learning (Max 8 Students)
Each class is limited to a maximum of 8 students, allowing for a more focused and supportive learning environment with one to one guidance throughout the course.
